Sample Essay 1 (Band 8.5)

The pervasive influence of social media platforms has sparked considerable debate regarding their societal value, much like the influence of literature on shaping societal values. While some consider these platforms essential tools for modern communication, others view them as mere distractions. I believe that social media’s impact largely depends on how we utilize these platforms.

Social media undeniably offers numerous benefits to society. Firstly, it facilitates instant global communication, enabling people to maintain relationships across vast distances and cultural boundaries. Additionally, these platforms have become powerful tools for raising awareness about social issues and coordinating humanitarian efforts during crises. For instance, during natural disasters, social media has proven instrumental in organizing relief efforts and locating missing persons.

However, critics raise valid concerns about social media’s potential negative effects. Many users spend countless hours scrolling through feeds, leading to decreased productivity and reduced real-world interactions. Furthermore, the addictive nature of these platforms can contribute to mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, particularly among young users who may develop unrealistic expectations based on carefully curated online personas.

In my opinion, social media can be either beneficial or detrimental depending on user behavior and awareness. Much like how to reduce food waste through education and technology, the key lies in education about responsible usage. When used mindfully as a tool for connection, learning, and positive engagement, social media enriches our lives. However, users must establish healthy boundaries and maintain a balanced approach to avoid its potential pitfalls.

Sample Essay 2 (Band 6.5)

Social media has become very important in our daily lives. Some people think it helps society, while others say it wastes time. I will discuss both sides and give my opinion.

On the positive side, social media helps people stay connected. We can talk to family and friends who live far away and share photos and news easily. It also helps businesses advertise their products and reach more customers. During Covid-19, many people used social media to work and study from home.

However, there are problems with social media too. Many people spend too much time checking their phones and looking at posts. This can make them less productive at work or school. Some people also feel sad or jealous when they see others’ perfect lives on social media, even though these posts may not show real life.

I think social media can be both good and bad. The impact of social media, like impact of fast fashion on environmental sustainability, depends on how we use it. If we use it carefully and limit our time online, it can be helpful. But if we spend too much time on it, it can cause problems.
