Band 8 Sample Essay

Tourism’s influence on local cultures has become a subject of heated debate. While some argue that international visitors threaten traditional ways of life, others maintain that tourism actually helps sustain cultural heritage. In my view, tourism’s impact is largely positive when properly managed.

Those who criticize tourism’s cultural effects often point to the commercialization of local traditions. In many tourist destinations, ancient ceremonies and crafts are modified to appeal to visitors, potentially losing their authentic meaning. For example, in Bali, traditional dances are shortened and simplified for tourist performances, removing their deeper spiritual significance. Moreover, young people in tourist areas may abandon their cultural practices in favor of more westernized lifestyles.

However, The impact of global travel restrictions on tourism has shown that tourism can actually preserve cultural heritage. Tourist interest generates income that supports traditional artisans and performers, enabling them to continue their crafts professionally. In Vietnam’s Hoi An Ancient Town, tourism revenue funds the restoration of historic buildings and helps maintain traditional lantern-making workshops. Furthermore, cultural exchange through tourism often instills pride in local communities about their heritage.

In my opinion, while tourism can pose challenges to cultural authenticity, its benefits outweigh the drawbacks when properly regulated. Local authorities should implement policies that protect cultural integrity while allowing communities to benefit economically from tourism. This balanced approach can create sustainable cultural preservation while supporting economic development.

Band 6.5 Sample Essay

Nowadays, international tourism affects traditional cultures in different ways. Some people think it has bad effects, but others believe it helps keep traditions alive. I will discuss both sides and give my opinion.

On the negative side, tourism can damage local cultures. When many tourists come to a place, local people sometimes change their traditions to make money. For example, in some Asian countries, traditional festivals become more like shows for tourists. Also, young people start copying foreign tourists’ behavior and forget their own culture.

But tourism can also help preserve traditions. When tourists come to see traditional things, local people can earn money from showing their culture. This means they can continue doing traditional activities. For instance, in Thailand, many traditional markets still exist because tourists like to visit them and buy local products.

I think tourism has both good and bad effects on culture, but mostly it is good. If local governments make good rules, tourism can help keep traditions alive while helping local people make money. However, they must be careful to protect real traditions.
