Sample Essay 1 (Band 8.5)

The debate over globalization’s influence on cultural heritage has intensified as our world becomes increasingly interconnected. While some argue that it erodes local traditions, others maintain that it actually helps preserve and promote cultural diversity. In my view, while globalization poses certain challenges, its overall impact on cultural preservation can be positive if managed thoughtfully.

Those who criticize globalization’s effect on local cultures often point to the homogenization of societies. As effects of globalization on local traditions demonstrate, traditional practices and customs may be overshadowed by dominant global trends. For instance, in many Asian countries, traditional festivals and ceremonies are becoming less prominent as younger generations embrace Western celebrations like Halloween and Valentine’s Day. Moreover, local languages face pressure from widely-used international languages, particularly English.

However, globalization also offers unprecedented opportunities for cultural preservation and exchange. Digital platforms and international media enable communities to document and share their cultural heritage with a global audience. Traditional art forms, music, and customs can find new admirers and practitioners worldwide. For example, Korean traditional music has gained international recognition through its fusion with modern genres, while maintaining its essential characteristics. Furthermore, impact of language loss on cultural identity shows how technology helps preserve endangered languages through digital archives and learning applications.

In my opinion, globalization’s impact largely depends on how communities respond to it. Successful cultural preservation requires a balanced approach that embraces global connectivity while maintaining local identity. Communities that actively adapt their traditions to the modern context while preserving their core values often thrive in the global environment.

Sample Essay 2 (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, globalization affects many aspects of life, including local cultures. Some people think it has bad effects on local traditions, but others believe it helps spread culture around the world. I will discuss both sides and give my opinion.

On the negative side, globalization can make local cultures disappear. Young people prefer modern lifestyles and forget traditional ways. For example, in my country, many young people don’t wear traditional clothes anymore and prefer Western fashion. Also, fast food restaurants are replacing local food shops in many cities.

However, globalization can also help preserve culture. The internet helps people share their traditions with others around the world. For instance, traditional music videos on YouTube get many views from different countries. Also, tourists want to see local cultures when they travel, so this helps keep traditions alive.

In my opinion, globalization has both good and bad effects on culture. I think we should try to keep our traditions while accepting some modern changes. This way, we can have the best of both worlds.
