The topic of homework and its necessity in education is a recurring theme in IELTS Writing Task 2. Based on analysis of past exam questions from 2018-2023, this topic appears approximately once every 6-8 months, particularly in questions about education systems and learning methods. Two notable variations have appeared:

Some people think that homework is necessary for students to learn effectively. Others believe students can learn better through activities in class and should not be given homework. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Analyzing the Question

  • Topic: Homework’s role in learning
  • Task: Discussion + Opinion
  • Key aspects to cover:
    • Arguments for homework
    • Arguments against homework
    • Personal stance with justification

Band 8.5 Sample Essay

Many educators debate whether homework contributes significantly to learning outcomes. While some advocate for its essential role, others argue that in-class activities suffice. I believe that moderate homework assignments can enhance learning when properly designed.

Those who support homework argue that it reinforces classroom learning and develops crucial independent study skills. When students practice concepts at home, they internalize the material more effectively and identify areas needing clarification. Furthermore, homework helps build time management abilities and self-discipline, preparing students for higher education and professional life where independent work is essential.

However, opponents contend that classroom activities provide sufficient learning opportunities. They emphasize that excessive homework can lead to stress, reduced family time, and diminished interest in learning. Additionally, some students lack adequate home environments for studying, creating educational inequalities. In-class learning ensures teacher guidance and equal access to resources.

In my view, while classroom learning is fundamental, thoughtfully assigned homework serves valuable educational purposes. The key lies in striking the right balance – assignments should be meaningful, manageable, and directly tied to learning objectives. Teachers should consider students’ circumstances and ensure homework enhances rather than hinders learning.

Therefore, I believe homework remains necessary but requires careful implementation. Schools should develop homework policies that maximize learning benefits while minimizing potential drawbacks, perhaps by limiting daily homework hours and focusing on quality over quantity.

Band 6.5 Sample Essay

Nowadays, there is big discussion about homework in education. Some people think it is very important, but others say students only need to study in class. I will discuss both ideas and give my opinion.

First, homework has some good points. Students can practice what they learned in class and remember it better. Also, when they do homework, they learn to study by themselves. This is good for university later. Many teachers say homework helps students get better grades.

But other people think homework is not good. They say students are very tired after school and need time to rest. Also, some students don’t have good place to study at home. They think all studying should be in classroom where teacher can help.

In my opinion, I think some homework is good but not too much. Teachers should give homework that helps students learn more. But they should not give too much homework because students need free time too. Maybe 1-2 hours homework each day is enough.

To conclude, I believe homework is important but we need to find good balance. Schools should make rules about how much homework teachers can give. This way, students can learn well but also have time for other things.
