Sample Essay 1 (Band 8.0)

The debate over the optimal funding approach for technology startups has intensified as how crowdfunding enables business startups becomes more prevalent. While some advocate for venture capital as a crucial enabler of success, others emphasize self-reliance. In my view, while both approaches have merit, venture capital funding often provides distinct advantages that can significantly accelerate startup growth.

Proponents of venture capital funding argue that it offers several critical benefits beyond mere financial support. Firstly, experienced venture capitalists bring valuable industry expertise, strategic guidance, and extensive networks that can help startups navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Additionally, their involvement often lends credibility to startups, making it easier to attract talent and secure partnerships. Furthermore, substantial funding enables rapid scaling and market expansion, which is particularly crucial in the fast-paced technology sector.

However, those favoring self-funding present compelling counterarguments. They contend that maintaining complete control over decision-making and company direction is paramount for realizing the founder’s vision. Moreover, bootstrapping often forces entrepreneurs to develop more sustainable business models and exercise greater financial discipline. This approach can result in more resilient companies that are not dependent on external funding cycles.

In my assessment, while self-funding may work for some ventures, venture capital funding typically offers the best pathway to success for technology startups, particularly those aiming for significant market impact. The combination of capital, expertise, and networks that venture funding provides can be instrumental in achieving rapid growth and maintaining competitiveness in the technology sector.

Sample Essay 2 (Band 6.5)

The topic of how to fund technology startups is very important today. Some people think venture capital is necessary, but others believe entrepreneurs should use their own money. I will discuss both sides and give my opinion.

Venture capital has many benefits for startups. When companies get venture capital, they get lots of money to grow their business quickly. The venture capitalists also help startups with advice and connections. This is very helpful for new companies that don’t have experience. For example, many successful companies like Facebook and Google used venture capital to become big companies.

On the other hand, using your own money has some advantages too. When entrepreneurs use their own money, they can make all decisions by themselves. They don’t have to listen to investors who might want different things. Also, they might be more careful with money because it is their own. This can help companies be more stable.

In my opinion, I think venture capital is better for technology startups because technology businesses need lots of money to grow fast. Also, the market changes quickly, so companies need to move fast to be successful. However, entrepreneurs should be careful about how much control they give to investors.
