Detailed analysis of globalization effects on local employment markets
Sample Essay 1 (Band 8.0)
The debate over globalization’s impact on local employment has intensified in recent years, with valid arguments on both sides. While I believe the overall effect is positive, it’s crucial to examine both perspectives carefully.
On one side, critics argue that globalization has displaced many local workers, particularly in manufacturing sectors. When multinational corporations relocate production to countries with lower labor costs, similar to impact of foreign investments on domestic markets, it often results in job losses in developed nations. For instance, numerous textile factories in the United States have closed, leaving thousands unemployed as production moved to countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam.
However, proponents contend that globalization creates more opportunities than it eliminates. The integration of global markets has generated new jobs in services, technology, and international trade. Moreover, foreign direct investment often brings advanced technology and training programs, enhancing local workforce skills. For example, when Samsung established facilities in Vietnam, it not only created thousands of direct jobs but also stimulated growth in supporting industries.
In my view, while globalization can cause short-term displacement, its long-term benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The key lies in helping affected workers adapt through retraining programs and education. Governments and businesses must collaborate to ensure that the benefits of globalization are distributed more equitably.
Sample Essay 2 (Band 6.5)
Globalization’s effect on jobs is a big topic of discussion today. There are different opinions about whether it helps or hurts local job markets.
Some people think globalization is bad for local jobs. When big companies move their factories to other countries, many workers lose their jobs. This happens because companies want to find cheaper workers in other countries. For example, many factories have closed in my country because production moved to China.
On the other hand, globalization can create new jobs. Many international companies open offices in different countries and hire local people. Also, when foreign companies come, they bring new technology and ways of working. This helps workers learn new skills. For example, when foreign IT companies come to India, they create many jobs for young people.
I think globalization has both good and bad effects, but mostly it is good. While some people lose their jobs, new types of work are created. The government should help workers learn new skills so they can find different jobs.
