Sample Essay 1 (Band 8.5)

In contemporary society, public service announcements (PSAs) have become ubiquitous across various media platforms, leading to debate about their effectiveness in addressing health and social issues. While some argue that these announcements are the most impactful method of public communication, others contend that alternative approaches might yield better results. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own position on this matter.

Those who advocate for PSAs through traditional and social media channels present compelling arguments. Firstly, these platforms offer unprecedented reach, enabling messages to simultaneously connect with millions of viewers. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, PSAs about mask-wearing and social distancing reached vast audiences quickly, contributing to increased public awareness and compliance with health guidelines. Additionally, modern PSAs can utilize sophisticated multimedia techniques to create emotionally resonant content that leaves lasting impressions on viewers.

Public health campaigns and disease prevention efforts have shown that alternative methods can be equally or more effective. Community-based interventions, such as school education programs and workplace workshops, often provide more detailed information and allow for direct interaction. Moreover, these face-to-face approaches can be tailored to specific audiences and cultural contexts, potentially making them more impactful than broad-reaching media messages.

In my view, the most effective approach combines both methods. While PSAs excel at raising initial awareness and creating broad societal impact, complementary ground-level initiatives are crucial for deeper understanding and behavioral change. This integrated strategy ensures comprehensive coverage while addressing the limitations of each individual approach.

Sample Essay 2 (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many people have different opinions about how to warn people about health and social problems. Some think TV, radio and social media announcements are best, but others believe there are better ways. I will discuss both sides and give my opinion.

On one side, public service announcements on media are very useful. They can reach many people quickly and are easy to understand. For example, when governments want to tell people about dangerous diseases, they can show short videos on TV or share information on Facebook. Many people, especially young people, use social media every day, so they will see these messages.

However, other methods can also work well. Face-to-face meetings and community programs help people learn more deeply about problems. Teachers can explain health issues to students in school, and doctors can talk directly to patients. These methods are more personal and people can ask questions if they don’t understand something.

In my opinion, both ways are important. Media announcements are good for quick information, but personal communication is better for detailed understanding. The best solution is to use both methods together to help people understand health and social problems better.
